PRINCE2 and Agile: how to combine the best of both worlds

When you think of PRINCE2, you might think of structured processes and formal roles. When you think of Agile, you immediately see dynamics and iterative sprints. However, it is a misconception that you cannot use these two together. In fact, in practice, the opposite appears to be the case: PRINCE2 and Agile reinforce each other! Discover how to use the best of both worlds.

“Why choose when you can combine?”

PRINCE2: solid foundation

PRINCE2 helps you to organize each project in clear steps, with clear responsibilities and a strong focus on the Business Case. This way, everyone in the team is on their toes and you continuously look: 'Does this project still deliver value?'

  • Benefit: You maintain a complete overview, which facilitates decision-making.
  • Tip:: Keep the Business Case 'alive' by regularly checking whether the project objective has not changed.

Agile: flexible and customer-oriented

Agile working is all about short feedback loops, direct collaboration with the customer and responding quickly to changes. Perfect if your product requirements are not set in stone, or if your project environment changes quickly.

  • Benefit: Your team can learn and improve immediately every sprint.
  • Tip:: Ensure frequent check-ins with stakeholders to keep everyone engaged.

Where do PRINCE2 and Agile come together?

  • The phasing of PRINCE2: You can embed each sprint (or iteration) in the PRINCE2 process phases, for example as 'management stages'.
  • Risk management: Both methodologies focus on risk, but PRINCE2 does it structurally and Agile picks it up 'on the go'. Combine them for a proactive and continuously adjusted risk approach.
  • Team composition: PRINCE2 names formal roles, Agile speaks more of a self-steering team. Adapt it to your culture; sometimes a Product Owner is useful, sometimes a formal Project Board.

Avoid pitfalls

  • Apply too rigidly: Don't get stuck in 'how it should be'. Look at what your team and organization need.
  • Insufficient communication: When you bring Agile and PRINCE2 together, good alignment is essential. Does everyone know why you do it this way?
  • scope creep: Agile can make the scope grow, while PRINCE2 wants clear agreements. Set clear boundaries and review the scope after each sprint.

Practical example

Suppose you are working on an IT project where the customer's requirements are not yet fully defined. With PRINCE2 you keep an eye on the big picture, monitor the budget and check the added value. At the same time you work Agile in sprints, so that you remain flexible and receive direct feedback on what you are building. In this way you combine structure and agility in one project.
