10 tips to work smarter: tip 5 - Clear your head

Use your head to think and not to remember.

Read in: 2 minutes.

Your head is working overtime, especially during busy and stressful periods. This creates a stressful and rushed feeling.

  • Ideally, you use your head to think and as little as possible to remember. So it is best to write things down outside your head. This gives an overview and a sense of control. And this in turn provides more energy, peace of mind and motivation to get started.
  • Keep a notebook handy for jotting down individual ideas. Or use the fun and handy TODO and TADAA block from WORK SMARTER, NOT HARDER. Of course, there are also many useful digital apps. OneNote, Wunderlist, Google Keep and EverNote are well-known examples of this. Or send yourself an email, for example using an app like 'Mail2self'. Invest in a system that is simple and that suits you well.
  • Do you quickly feel overwhelmed or do you lose heart when you see your endless list of to-do's? Then view this list as nothing more or less than a 'mind dump'. That is a place where you 'park' everything you need or want to do by heart. But it doesn't all have to happen now. Then choose a maximum of 5 tasks every day that you write down and hang in a visible place. Have you completed these 'five to fix' and still have time to do more today? Then take your complete list and choose an extra task as a 'bonus'. Great, that's a good thing then!
  • Are these tasks or activities with a deadline or that have to be done at a specific time? Then mark them in your diary. This allows you to easily let go of them and meet them again by then.

This is the fifth tip in a series of 10 tips to work smarter.
