“Growing Pains” and the Carry Mathison Wall from Homeland

To develop the vision for the future, the team set to work on a large brown “Carry Mathison Wall” paper. As material the team used photos and other images from a large mountain of magazines (kilo or 8 kilo). These were divided into three streams. The mutual dependencies were visualized with red threads.

Issue

This problem occurred with one of our customers. So we started working on the “Carry Mathison Wall”. If you've seen the Homeland series, you'll recognize it (see picture). Carry is the secret agent who sees through the most complex plots and exposes them at the risk of his own life. She hangs all relevant information, articles, photos, maps in a room. She does this to provide insight into the mutual connections and to create more understanding and overview.

Method

For this we have organized an “away day”. We focused on improving teamwork by doing an in-depth exercise based on three personal questions. Team members who sometimes worked together for years, told each other completely new and intimate things about themselves. This resulted in new insights, more mutual trust and more understanding for each other. Then enter the content. Namely, why are we on earth. Explained by the director / owner. Where is the company going? What are important milestones and times on the horizon?

The team then added lines to this visualization to plot milestones over time.

After this session, the team further perfected this time planning wall in the office. Every week the entire team is around the Wall to update it and define additional actions.
