A comparison of PRINCE2 vs. Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK)

Both methods have their own supporters and benefits, but how do they compare? Let's take a closer look at these two approaches.

Flexibility vs. standardization:

PRINCE2 is all about flexibility within a structured framework. It provides clear guidelines and processes, but also encourages adapting the method to specific project needs. On the other hand, PMBOK is known for its standardized approach. It contains a comprehensive set of knowledge areas and processes that are universally applicable, but can sometimes be less agile for exceptional projects.

Focus on business justification:

A notable feature of PRINCE2 is its continued emphasis on business justification. Every project must have a clear business justification and this is consistently evaluated throughout the project lifecycle. PMBOK also emphasizes justification, but this can sometimes be applied less stringently in practice.

Roles and responsibilities:

PRINCE2 defines clear roles and responsibilities for each project, including the client, the user and the supplier. This structure promotes accountability and clarity. PMBOK has also defined roles, but these are less extensive than in PRINCE2.

Process-oriented vs. knowledge areas approach:

PRINCE2 is structured around seven process-oriented themes (practices), which allow projects to be planned, managed and executed in a structured manner. On the other hand, PMBOK is organized around ten knowledge areas that cover different aspects of project management.

Risk management:

Both methods recognise the importance of risk management, but PRINCE2 has a specific focus on identifying, assessing and managing risks at every stage of a project. This can sometimes go deeper than the PMBOK approach.

The choice between PRINCE2 and PMBOK depends on the specific needs of your organization and the type of projects you work on. PRINCE2 offers the flexibility to tailor a structured framework to your needs, while PMBOK provides a comprehensive set of best practices and standardization. Both methods have their own unique benefits and by choosing the right approach you can help your organization successfully navigate the constant waves of change.
