Discover our classroom and in-company Lean and Lean Six Sigma training courses

After expanding our e-learning offering with Lean Six Sigma earlier this year, we now also have classroom and in-company training courses available.

As a result, Lagant now has a wide range of Lean and Lean Six Sigma e-learning and training for every situation and level. The curriculum for Green Belt training has been developed in consultation with the University of Twente and the theory certificate has also been co-signed by the University of Twente. These and all other training courses are also available as in-company training courses.

Lean and Lean Six Sigma are both methodologies used to improve processes in organizations, but they have some important differences. Here are the main differences between the two:

Focus on process improvement:

  • Lean focuses mainly on eliminating waste in processes. The goal is to improve efficiency by reducing activities that do not add value to the customer.
  • Lean Six Sigma combines Lean principles with Six Sigma methodology. Six Sigma emphasizes reducing variability in processes and minimizing defects. It aims to achieve a process performance level that allows only 3,4 defects per million.

Tools and techniques:

  • Lean uses tools such as value stream mapping, 5S (Sort, Arrange, Clean, Standardize, Persist), Kaizen events, and Kanban to identify and implement process improvements.
  • Lean Six Sigma uses the same Lean tools, but also adds statistical tools and techniques, such as DMAIC (Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, Control), to analyze and reduce variability in processes.

Goals:

  • The main purpose of Lean is to deliver value to the customer by reducing waste and shortening lead time.
  • Lean Six Sigma focuses on delivering quality and customer satisfaction by both eliminating waste and reducing variability.

Role of employees:

  • In Lean employee involvement is encouraged, and employees are encouraged to propose improvements and participate in Kaizen activities.
  • Lean Six Sigma places greater emphasis on using specially trained experts, known as Six Sigma Black Belts and Green Belts, to solve complex problems and perform statistical analysis.

In summary, Lean focuses primarily on reducing waste and improving efficiency, while Lean Six Sigma takes a broader approach using both Lean principles and Six Sigma methodology to reduce both waste and variability and improve overall process quality. The choice between the two methodologies depends on the specific needs and goals of an organization.

Use Lean when:

  • The main focus is on reducing waste and improving efficiency in processes.
  • Your organization wants to quickly implement small improvements and actively involve employees in the improvement process.
  • The problem is relatively simple and does not require in-depth statistical analysis.
  • There is a need for quick results and rapid implementation of improvements.

Use Lean Six Sigma when:

  • Quality problems and variability in processes are an important point of attention.
  • The problem is complex and requires in-depth statistical analysis and troubleshooting.
  • The organization strives to achieve a very high quality standard and wants to keep defects to a minimum.
  • There is a need for a structured approach (such as DMAIC) to systematically identify, analyze, improve and control problems.

It is also possible to combine elements of both methodologies, depending on the specific situation and the needs of the organization. For example, some organizations start with Lean to reduce waste and streamline processes, and later adopt Lean Six Sigma to achieve deeper analysis and quality improvements.

It is important to evaluate your organization's specific goals and challenges before deciding which methodology is most appropriate. In some cases, they can even be used side by side to provide a comprehensive approach to process improvement. Would you like to know more, or help choosing the right method for your situation? Within the Six Sigma methodology there are different roles, such as Six Sigma Black Belts, Green Belts and Yellow Belts. They lead and supervise improvement projects and ensure the use of statistical techniques.

Yellow Belt: Yellow Belts can work in project teams and provide support in executing improvement projects.

Green Belt: Green Belts have a thorough knowledge of Lean and/or Lean Six Sigma tools and techniques. They can independently lead and implement improvement projects within their work area. The Green Belt teaching program was developed in consultation with the University of Twente and the theory certificate is also co-signed by the University of Twente.

Tip: After passing your theory exam, do you also want to pass your practical exam?

Black Belt: Black Belts have a high level of expertise in Lean and/or Lean Six Sigma and are able to tackle complex problems and lead organizational change. They are often involved in strategic decision-making and coaching Green Belts and project teams.

For e-learning Lean and Lean Six Sigma at Lagant: you optionally have the option to book personal guidance (online or by telephone) by an experienced Master Black Belt. This supervisor will go through the theory with you where necessary and show how it is applied in practice: this way you can optimally benefit from the trainer's expertise and further develop yourself in the field.

If you need help determining the best project management method for your company, then request a facilitated workshop. At Lagant we have a wide range of e-learning and project management training. With more than 30 years of experience in training, coaching and consultancy in the field of project management, Lagant offers an extensive range of solutions for both individuals and organizations.

Lagant's professionals, known for their passion and craftsmanship, act as change guides. Our goal is to transfer knowledge, skills and craftsmanship, so that clients can eventually manage themselves and grow in their project management skills.
