10 tips to work smarter: tip 9 – Banish distractions

The main thing is to keep the main thing, the main thing. -Steven Covey

It is very natural for our brain to pay direct attention to that which imposes itself on us from the outside. However, this does not have to mean that all these things are really important to you. A waste of your time and energy to always respond immediately to what presents itself ad hoc. Especially when you realize that real concentration or 'flow' only develops after a period of 15 to 25 minutes. Reason enough to tackle your disruptors.

  • Consider setting a number of fixed times or 'consultation hours' for colleagues with questions. The rest of the day you can work better focused. Also save up things that you want to discuss with others, so that you can approach them efficiently in turn.
  • Close the door of your office or sit in a different place. Preferably also inform your colleagues or roommates in advance that you do not want to be disturbed.
  • Usually you yourself are your biggest disruptor by wanting to react immediately to everything. So also protect yourself against yourself. Do this by putting your phone out of sight and at least put it on silent. Turn off all pop-ups and notifications and set yourself to 'do not disturb' in programs such as Skype, Teams or Google Meet.
  • In order to say NO to jammers and time wasters, it is essential that you have your priorities clear. So what are you saying 'YES' to today? A few help questions:
    • What goals do I want to achieve?
    • What can (or will) I do today to get closer to my goals?
    • So what is really important to me today?
