10 tips to work smarter: tip 4 – FUN first!

'A year from now, you wish you had started today...' - Karen Lamb

Do you find that you tend to put off things that you find difficult or less enjoyable? Unfortunate! Because it is precisely this delay that costs you extra energy. It makes you feel dissatisfied and irritated at the end of the day.

  • Motivate yourself by focusing on the pleasant feeling that comes after the task is completed. How nice would it be if it's finally done and you're done with it?
  • In this case, fear can be a good counselor for a change. Imagine what will happen if you don't act now. What if you don't meet this deadline? And what if you didn't do it at all? What is the risk? This 'disaster scenario' urges you to really take action now.
  • Isn't all this motivating enough? Then promise it to someone else. Bet you're ready to get started?
  • Examine for yourself why you are procrastinating. The solution lies in this fact.

✖ Not fun? Then do it as early in the day as possible. Start the day with those things that are FUN: Tricky And Procrastinating Jobs. This ensures a relieved and energetic feeling for the rest of the day.

✖ Not important? Do not do it. A waste of your time. Working smart is mainly a matter of deciding what you are NOT going to do. What a relief!

✖ Big job? Chop the work into small manageable sub-jobs. Then write this down in your agenda or on your to-do list with the addition of an active verb such as calling, reading, e-mailing, looking up, etc. This means that you will feel little resistance to start.

✖ Not the right job for you? Delegate it. What you find boring or less fun may be a very nice challenge for someone else. And it gives you the opportunity to do what you are really good at. So win-win!
