10 Tips to Work Smarter: Tip 6 – Do One Thing at a Time and Finish It!

To do two things at once, is to do neither... - Publilius Syrus

Multitasking gives the feeling of being very efficient and productive. But nothing could be further from the truth… Constantly or unnecessarily switching between tasks costs extra time and energy. And in doing so, you increase the chance of mistakes and 'loose ends'. With your conscious brain you can only do one thing right at a time. Reason enough to stop here permanently!

  • Allow yourself to do 1 thing at a time and give this job the attention it deserves. And preferably finish it before you start something new. In addition to your focus, this also increases the quality and efficiency of your work.
  • Did you know that your interlocutor notices immediately if you do not listen to them with 100% attention? Even when you're on the phone. You often respond a fraction too late or you get stuck in 'ehhh'. This is not only disrespectful, but also ineffective. So close all applications on your PC while you are on the phone. Or walk up and down to get the blood flowing again in your body and to your brain. Do you have extra movement?
  • Are you working on a big job and something comes your way in between that you feel you really need to pick up NOW? Then put aside what you were doing and give this new task your full attention. Make a note of where you left off, so that you can quickly pick up the old task again at the right point.
