10 tips to work smarter: tip 7 – Cluster activities

Nothing is more inefficient than doing very efficiently what doesn't need to be done.

By making a few simple adjustments to your work, you can significantly increase your efficiency with less effort. But remember that efficiency is only a tool that allows you to better spend your time on what is really important to you!

  • Also bundle things that require a specific energy or mindset. For example, you need a completely different energy for the telephone than for writing a policy document. A useful way to increase your effectiveness can be to work concentrated for 45 minutes every hour. You then use the remaining 15 minutes to read emails, get coffee or answer individual questions from colleagues.
  • Work as much as possible with fixed formats and templates for minutes, quotations and reports. You then only have to fill in the specific information. In Word or various mail programs you can get started with setting up quick parts, templates, automatic rules and shortcuts.
  • Be honest: do you regularly perform simple manual jobs that you know can be automated just fine? It is really worth investing in this. Do you not feel like it or have no affinity with it? Ask an expert to help you with this.
