When I look at the large organizations, I see the role of project manager by no means finished. After all, there are still a lot of projects that need to be tackled in a traditional way and where an Agile approach will not lead to the desired results.
On the other hand, I also see that the project manager role is changing. Project managers are increasingly dealing with teams that deliver their products in an agile way. As a project manager you will have to be able to deal with this. This is also reflected in the range of training courses that focus on the project manager in an Agile environment such as PRINCE2 Agile, Agile Project Management and nowadays also Agile Program Management.
In my view, we will still need project managers, also in Agile environments. Project managers will have to delve into the Agile approach in order to be able to bring a project to a successful conclusion in an organization where Agile is used. Project managers can also use many techniques from Agile, such as short time boxes, often deliver, continuous testing and the like, to be even better able to manage their projects.
No, I don't see the project manager dying out but the role will change. This means new challenges for many project managers and nowadays the project manager must also have Agile knowledge in his or her baggage.
